Reverend Gibson of Ebenezer Baptist Church Endorses John Choe for City Council
Rev. Calvin Gibson

John Choe, Democrat for City Council, received the endorsement of the Reverend Calvin L. Gibson of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Flushing. Rev. Gibson pledged his full support for John Choe citing his advocacy for civil rights and racial equality. The congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church includes hundreds of local African-American leaders and residents active in District 20.

Rev. Gibson stated: “John Choe is the most vibrant, experienced, and effective candidate in this election. Not only will John Choe bring new energy and welcome ideas to the City Council, he is also the most qualified candidate in the race to continue Councilman John Liu’s record of leadership and excellence. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. stated that ‘our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.’ On September 15, I will encourage our community to come out in support of Democrat John Choe for City Council.”

John Choe has worked closely with community leaders like Rev. Gibson to improve the quality of life for all residents. Rev. Gibson’s support reinforces John Choe's deep relationship and support among African-Americans and adds to his long list of supporters, including the NYS African-American Public Affairs Committee. John Choe has outlined major plans for improvement for Bland Houses and the Latimer Gardens as well as expanded initiatives to improve education and employment opportunities for young people throughout the district.

In response to the endorsement by Rev. Gibson, John Choe said: “Reverend Gibson is a well respected leader of the community and I am honored to receive his vote of confidence. The members of Ebenezer Baptist Church have been on the frontlines of the struggle for civil rights and I am proud to build this strong alliance for community development and social justice with the members of the African-American community. As the next Council Member, I will continue my public service model of inclusive leadership and consensus-based decision-making. We must come together if we are to overcome the common challenges confronting our community.”

John Choe has two decades of experience in government and community service – most recently as Chief of Staff to Councilman Liu with whom he served on the frontlines of recent battles for educational reform, health care, senior services and affordable housing. As Co-President of the Mitchell-Linden Civic Association, John Choe has fought for the rights of Flushing residents and has demonstrated a commitment to holding city agencies accountable. Endorsed by the Democratic Organization of Queens County as well as countless unions and community associations, John Choe will carry on the tradition of leadership and experience our community so greatly deserves.
